On Tuesday we made our first visit of the Autumn to the northern Wolds. There was an absence of many of the usual small birds: Kingfisher, Nuthatch, Grey Wagtail and Brambling. There was a Marsh Tit though and we heard flocks of Siskins. Winter Thrushes were also missing. The Red Kites were still in good numbers throughout our visit. Even the habitual Tawny Owl was not on display for us.

On Wednesday we went to Blacktoft Sands as rain was forecast. The rain didn’t really materialise. The White-Tailed Lapwing was still present, as were some Snipe, Black-tailed Godwits, Wigeon, Teal and some very smart Stonechats.

On Thursday we were able to catch up with Stone Creek. The tide was coming in as we arrived, which meant flocks of Golden Plovers continued to swirl around. The highlight in the afternoon was a Woodcock, which appeared to be startled by a deer, and flew straight towards the pm group on the flood bank. It spotted us at the last moment and veered away, but simultaneously displaying its beautifully-marked cryptic plumage. It disappeared deep in the saltmarsh vegetation.

On Friday the forecast was terrible for the coast, so we switched to Tophill Low. In the morning we headed north. Pat spotted a drake Red-Crested Pochard on the reservoir under the visitor centre. North Marsh was enlivened with a visit from a mixed Tit flock, consisting mainly of Long-tailed Tits, Blue Tits, a Great Tit, a Treecreeper and a pair of Goldcrests. The hide near Hempholme was fairly barren, but a single Heron flew over, and we saw at least 6 Jays.

Returning to the visitor centre we enjoyed good views of a pair of Red-Crested Pochard. The strong southerly winds meant the birds were very close to viewers.
