Barton 2, Yorks Wolds 2

Grey Wagtail
On Tuesday we travelled to Ness End.  I was delayed by what I found out later was the tragic repercussions of a high speed police car chase.  The weird thing was last week’s smart male Pintail had been replaced by a moulting individual.  There had been a major influx of Redwings since last Thursday.  Unfortunately, the Bittern failed to put in an appearance, would the same happen on Friday?

On Tuesday afternoon I travelled to a Humber location.  It was fairly overcast, so I didn't expect too much from the photos.

On Wednesday we journeyed to the northern wolds on an exceptionally  calm day.  At the end of the session both am and pm bird recorders confirmed that they reached the 100 species for the term.  The lack of wind meant that the Red Kites weren’t flying around as much as usual.  We had brief views of a Grey Wagtail both before and after lunch.  The Kingfisher was absent both times, but Sally identified a Nuthatch for the afternoon session.  Of course there were plenty of doomed Pheasants, which everyone managed to avoid running over, thus sparing their lives for a few minutes.  On Thursday morning a shoot was taking place up the hill.

On Thursday we returned to the wolds.  It was windy first thing, but the wind lessened during the course of the day.  The Tawny Owl and Kingfisher were still absent, but the light was better so the Nuthatch and Grey Wagtail phots were an improvement.

On Friday we made our final planned trip to Ness End for 2021.  It all seemed a bit quieter than of late.  We failed to see a Bittern, and the Pintail had left.  We did spot a Kingfisher in the morning, and a Water Rail after lunch.

"The eye was rimmed with fire, but was itself glazed, yellow as a cat's, watchful and intent, and the black slit of its pupil opened on a pit, a window into nothing."
