'Ee By Gum

This week’s photos are accompanied with Yorkshire dialect names for the species whenever they could be traced.  On a few occasions a name couldn’t be located, so another interesting local name from elsewhere in the country has been substituted.

On Thursday we made our first trip of the Autumn to Ness End.  Both groups saw a Bittern.  We found a smart drake Pintail in the afternoon; the first time I’ve ever seen that species at this location.  There weren’t as many Redwings as expected.

On Friday we made our first visit of the year to Filey.  It’s no doubt that the star bird was a Snow Bunting.  In the morning there was a confiding female bird, but after lunch she’d been joined by a more striking male bird.  It twittered before it flew, and then displayed lovely white panels as it circled around the spectators.

After lunch we couldn’t visit the beach as the tide was coming in quickly, so we went to Filey Dams.  The highlight here was a squabble between two Black-tailed Godwits.  We were looking into the light, which affected the resulting photos.
