Weekend Wonders

I heard there had recently been a mass emergence of 500+ Marsh Fritillaries 51 miles from home, so I went for a look. I've never seen them before. They were smaller than I was expecting, but truly beautiful. They have been described as a butterfly like a piece of stained glass. They are exquisite.

A couple of Dingy Skippers were also on the wing.  They kept having skirmishes with the Fritillaries, and then posing briefly before flying off again.

On the way back I stopped off at Welton Waters.  A female Holly Blue was the highlight, as I was unable to locate the Grasshopper Warbler in its accustomed place.

I had a look at Welwick saltings over the weekend.  On Saturday  afternoon there were three Short-eared Owls, but the following day, which was slightly windier there were none!  When they found each other there was often a mid-air stand-off.  However a male Peregrine and a Marsh Harrier were present when the owls were absent.  Plus, its always a good day when you come across an unexpected Wheatear.  There were more than 30 Linnets, several Yellowhammers and a few reed Buntings, but they didn't remain to have their photos taken.

Back at home a young Robin sat on a spade handle, and waited to be fed by one of its parents.
