Arrival of Spring

On Monday I had a look at the North Yorkshire Moors.  There were no Golden Plovers as far as I could see, and very few Lapwings and Curlews.  However, there were plenty of sightings of Red Grouse.

Not to be outdone a Tuesday am stalwart has had a pair of Blackcaps on her Cottingham feeders for several weeks.

Wednesday was much greyer, but at least the forecast rain didn't materialise until both classes had been complete.  Despite this we had 56 species in the morning, and 57 after lunch.

Tony also went on to Burton Agnes to see an unusual example of  escaped wildfowl on the local pond.

On Thursday we enjoyed a sunny day at Potteric Carr. More Chiffchaffs had arrived, but the most welcome summer visitor was a relatively confiding drake Garganey - our first for several years.  We wouldn't have seen it at all without being given a tip from a member of a U3A York group.  Thanks a lot.  The Garganey was new for several there, and for those who had seen one before it was our closest view.

On Friday we arrived at a very sunny RSPB Blacktoft.  Only a few weeks ago there was very little to see, but today everything came out in force.  The highlights were probably the skydancing Marsh Harriers.
