Today we were at a location on the Yorkshire Wolds where the morning group saw 7 Buzzards in the air together, plus 3 Red Kites. There wasen't a great deal of other birds about, but in the morning sunshine the year's first Chaffinches and Greenfinches began to sing. Also singing were Goldfinches, a Song Thrush and a Marsh Tit. In fact we saw 3 different pairs of Marsh Tits, and in the bright conditions the class were able to pick out the shining cap, and smart bib, which they were able to associate with the sneezing call. The afternoon group arrived to witness the climax of a 'large Sparrowhawk's' display flight, but there were no further sightings. Other birds seen here included: Treecreeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Long-tailed, Great, Blue and Coal Tits, Mallard and a Moorhen. However, there were no signs of previous stalwarts at this site: Green Woodpecker and Grey Wagtail, or the more elusive Jay! Perhaps this hilly site has been especially badly hit by the extreme cold weather in November & December!
