Orange Trousers Attacks Windhover

Jeremy’s Hobby Attacking a Kestrel

Adult Spoonbill

Tuesday's highlight was a young Great Spotted Woodpecker calling persistently from its nest-hole.  The morning was curtailed by heavy rain.

Wednesday was supposed to take place at an exposed location, but the forecast was appalling, so we relocated to RSPB Blacktoft Sands.

On Thursday a very windy day was forecast plus rain, so we travelled over the Humber.  We encountered our oldest Great Egret.  The yellow bill of youth had been replaced by a black one, and yellow legs had been substituted.  Families of Long-tailed Tits were glimpsed in a couple of places, and low-flying Swifts were de rigeur.

The best sightings were reserved for the end of the circuit.  A male Bearded Tit/Reedling posed briefly near a seating area.  It was here that Jeremy spotted a Hobby perched in a Willow.  It stayed there some time before sallying forth to attack a Kestrel which had strayed too close into its personal space.

Thursday's location was repeated on Friday.   As we waited for the final person to arrive a Bittern flew right over the car park and then headed over the road and dropped down the other side of the bushes.  There was a lot more booming than yesterday during the morning.  The Hobby failed to appear, but the Cuckoo was calling for a great deal of the early part of the morning.  We couldn't find yesterday's Bearded Tits, but Reed Warblers showed better.
