Half-Term Catch-Up

A fortnight ago Thursday afternoon’s visit to Alkborough Flats had to be cancelled because of the atrocious forecast of heavy and persistent rain, which actually turned out to be correct.  We were able to catch-up this week.  At first it looked as though the stifling heat had made everything scuttle for cover.  There was no Cetti’s Warbler singing consistently in the car park for the first time, but it did decide to put on a performance by the time the final class members had arrived.  We hadn’t even walked for 10 minutes before we reached an area with a very loud Water Rail and an extremely busy male Bearded Tit criss-crossing the path searching for and returning with food for its youngsters in a nest.  We reached a dead tree next to the path when Anne spotted an immature Bearded Tit in its branches, which remained fairly still long enough for everyone to get the best views ever seen on a Thursday afternoon.

We carried along the path accompanied by “singing” Reed Warblers and the more photogenic Sedge Warblers.  Like every other occasion the Reed Buntings were ubiquitous.  A male Linnet also posed on the fence.  We reached the gap in the vegetation near the hide and saw a Spoonbill and a Little Egret near where we once saw a Swamphen.  Our luck held when the Spoonbill abandoned its position and flew straight towards us.  It settled down right in front of the hide, giving some some their closest view of this species they’ve ever had.

We left Margaret to take more photos and reached the flooded field, which contained many Mute Swans, a handful of Spoonbills, plenty of Gadwall, and other assorted duck species.  There was no sign of the Great White Egrets or Glossy Ibis.  However, when we returned 20 minutes later the Glossy Ibis was near a large line of Mute Swans.  It was very distant, and everyone had to strain their eyes in order to first actually spot it near a Coot; it then required even more squinying to attempt to pick out the very distinctive bill.  This was a “lifer” for every participant, and maybe the first time we have seen this species on a Thursday afternoon in 18 years.

On the first Saturday and Sunday afternoons of half-term, I checked out my puddle at Patrington Haven.  The 'Channel Wagtail' was still present.  Unfortunately, this puddle had now dried up, so is no longer the focal point of all these visiting species.
