Week 10 Summary

Last week was the end of term for most sessions, but we still need to catch up  with Wednesdays.  On Tuesday we had the closest views of a Shag that we've ever seen.  There were still plenty of Puffins on show, and most of the usual suspects.  Also saw: female Peregrine, Guillemots, Razorbills, Fulmars, Gannets, Kittiwakes, Rock Pipit, Rock Dove, Linnets, Whitethroat, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Jackdaw, Pied Wagtail etc.  For those who are squeamish don't look at the Herring Gulls postponed from last week!

On Wednesday we had our final 2017 visit to Wharram.  Both groups saw a Grey Wagtail, but the Redstarts and Spotted Flycatchers were noticeable by their absence.  Other things seen included: Unfortunately, it was grey, with low cloud & drizzle at times, no sun: Grey Wagtail, Marsh Tit, Green Woodpecker, Yellowhammer, Linnet, Goldcrest, Blackcap, etc. At Wharram Quarry the poor conditions may have made watching sluggish butterflies easier, and no glare on the Marbled Whites, Burnet Moths, Common Blues, Small Heath, Ringlets, Meadow Browns, etc.

19 Years of Travelling!

I have recently heard back about the colour-ringed Black-tailed Godwit we saw last Thursday morning in the drizzle at Kilnsea.  This vibrantly-plumaged bird was a welcome sight on such a miserable morning, but the news about its ringing history, and previous sightings of this long-distance traveller are really astonishing.  It's full history is recounted below at the bottom of the blog.

White-Winged Black Tern

This afternoon I had some free time, so I went to see if the White-Winged Black Tern was still at Kilnsea Wetlands.  I wasn't disappointed.  What a smart very elegant Tern it is, but it never stayed still, so it was very difficult to photograph!
