Week 5: Spoonbills Galore

This week the socially-distanced class members went to Alkborough Flats.  We had views of up to 30 Spoonbills - the highest figure I've ever seen locally.   It was noted a few weeks ago when they we're much closer to the path that some had a red-throat patch.  Research by Jane Robinson reveals that these individuals are over 3 years old.  A few minutes after a thunderstorm and heavy rain we saw a Reed Warbler, Sedge Warblers, a Willow Warbler a Whitethroat and several Reed Buntings all in the same strand of dead hawthorns and living rose briars.  A field of sheep was full of a score of Yellow Wagtails until the farmer came romping on his quad bike.  In the afternoon the same field was deserted of birds.  One of the highlights was a Bittern spotted by Friday afternoon's Ian.  Not to be outdone Deborah spotted an almost invisible Great White Egret in the heat haze.  On Thursday it was much closer, and could be photographed.
