Purple Emperor
This morning my nephew persuaded me to give the bumper butterfly wood in Lincolnshire a try. I was so pleased with the results. the first I saw was one of the rarest nationally - a Black Hairstreak, then its abundant cousin - The purple Hairstreak, which spends most of its time in the canopy of trees. All the time because of the relentless sun White Admirals and Silver-Washed fritillaries whizzed past without posing. Later, a different large butterfly flew past at great speed. It took quite a time before I managed to get a decent view - the holy grail - a Purple Emperor. There were also plenty of common butterflies, but also some Scarlet Tiger Moths.
