Silver-Washed Fritillary (c) 2009 Maurice Gordon
The above butterfly is now extinct in Yorkshire, but in the C19th it was not uncommon in the county. According to The Butterflies of Yorkshire (2005) it may have died out in the mid-C20th because of "changes in woodland management, which abanonded coppicing & allowed close growing conifers to shade out the growth of violets" (the food plant). Maurice photographed this one in the New Forest.

A lovely butterfly Michael, well photographed by Maurice. I have never seen one.
