Bearded Tit
It was a Week of close-ups at each reserve. On Tuesday it was Bearded Tits, a Wren, a Goldcrest, plus a Chaffinch and a Blue Tit. On Wednesday a Cetti's Warbler landed right in front of everyone, but all three cameramen failed to capture it. On Thursday the closest encounters were with a Kestrel, another elusive Cetti's, a Little Grebe, a Mediterranean Gull, and a species we don't discuss in polite society. On Friday after a week of near misses we did actually get a photo of a Cetti's Warbler, plus a close Goldfinch, Robin and Little Egret, but we didn't exactly get a ringside seat for the Avocet scrap
On Tuesday we crossed the Humber Bridge for the final time this winter. The first hide was quite productive, although we didn’t see a Bittern. First, there was a quick glimpse of a Water Rail, a Marsh Harrier. Then we had a surprise when a Stoat started leaping around down one of the channels.

On the walk round the perimeter, we had an amazingly close encounter with a Wren.

From the next hide there was a single Great Crested Grebe. Plus Wigeon, Shoveler, Teal and a record number of 17 Redshank.

It was an exceedingly high tide, so there were only room for more Wigeon there.

From the next hide, despite the wind we saw a pair of Bearded Tits, but only the female showed really well. The Tues am course ended on a very respectable 98 species.

On Wednesday we had to shun the exposed cliffs at Bempton for the slightly more sheltered bad-weather location. We saw more than 40 species here, despite the less than ideal conditions. A Cetti’s Warbler showed itself briefly in an exposed locations, but by the time the cameras were ready, it was back undercover. The Weds am session ended on 99 species, but if we’d been able to get to Bempton, we may have hit a record of 107 species. Weds pm ended with a figure closer to 90.

On Thursday we went to Tophill Low. Both groups started with a difficult-to-see Tawny Owl close to the car park. In the woods nearby we had an elusive Cetti’s Warbler, but a confiding Dunnock. We trekked to South Marsh East where both groups saw Marsh Harriers, and whilst the morning group saw an Avocet, the afternoon session trumped that with a Mediterranean Gull.

On Friday we went to North Cave Wetlands after a very wet journey. Once again a Cetti’s Warbler played cat and mouse with us, but we did see it properly, and I did manage an unobstructed photo.

For the second day running we had a Blackcap singing, but also three Sand Martins - our first signs of spring. We saw 6 Mediterranean Gulls, and another 2 were elsewhere on site - a new record for the reserve. The Egyptian Goose was too far for a photo. Three Avocets had an elegant fight, before Dave spotted some colourful Black-tailed Godwits. So, ended the final session of the winter term, at least spring is nearly here.
