Shaggy Ink Cap (c) 2008 John Batham
Another terrible weather forecast, so we had to ditch Patrington Haven, and head for the hides at Tophill instead. The highlight in the morning was a Slavonian Grebe showing fairly close just over the 'O' reservoir wall from the 'L' shaped South Marsh hide. Also, from there was a drake eclipse Pintail on South Marsh East, which was missing in the afternoon. There seemed to be plenty of Long-tailed Tits everywhere, and we had some good views of Goldcrests and a Great Spotted Woodpecker in the car park. Another interesting sight was a lesser spotted Hotspur, whose eyes looked incredibly tired, but who was full of interesting stories & local birding info. He was the overall highlight of the day!
