The Sun Had His Hat on

Redwing

It was too cold and windy at Scarboro on Monday, so I checked out the wolds instead.  I found a top spot for Bramblings, but this was eclipsed by an easier one to get to on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday.

On Tuesday and Wednesday because of the icy conditions we switched to North Cave Wetlands.  Immediately we were met with a feeding frenzy with Bramblings and Tree Sparrows, but with some Greenfinches, a Bullfinch and a couple of Reed Buntings.  Siskins avoided the feeding station, but were located in various other places around the reserve.

We were very lucky on Wednesday morning, as the Little Owl was pointed out to us.  It was hard to see, but it moved around a bit, and we chose the best vantage point from which to view it.  We didn’t move on until the last person had caught up with it.  We couldn’t see it in the afternoon, or on Friday.

Pete spotted and identified a pair of Egyptian Geese.  They were still there after lunch.  On Friday they had moved to the far side of the ice.

In the afternoon there was a rustle in the undergrowth, and we were presented with the most confiding Redwing I have ever encountered.  It allowed the whole group to pass within a few feet of it, but it was completely unconcerned and continued to look for another snack before darkness fell.

On Friday I returned to N.Cave after a horrendous drive, which should have taken 25 minutes, but went on for about and hour and a half.  The group watched the Bramblings for 10 minutes.  Shortly afterwards Glenn located and identified a very distant Peregrine perched in an Oak Tree.  An amazing Spot.  10 minutes later Joan rose to the challenge and spotted and identified a male Stonechat.  The camera stayed in the car, so there are no photos from Friday.

On Thursday we stuck with Ness End despite the ice and light snow flurries on the journey.  We saw most of the usual suspects. Even the Bittern turned up after lunch, and was seen by all from the Main Hide.

Two former Friday pm stalwarts have been to various sites in West Yorkshire.  An immature Glossy Ibis has been showing well at St. Aidan’s.
