New Year, New Birds

On January the 1st I found a Little Owl in a place I pass often, where I’ve never seen one before.  It was there a couple of days later.  The Kestrel was on a hedgerow a few metres beyond the Little Owl.

We haven’t seen a drake Red-breasted Merganser on the classes for around 13 years when one surprised us at Blacktoft, so I checked out the one at Scarborough Harbour.

On Tuesday morning the first class of the year took place at East Park.  Unfortunately, it was an overcast day, so it wasn’t the best for photography.  Despite the grey light, we did find a very bright bird after hearing its distant but piercing calls.

There were noticeably fewer dabbling ducks than normal.  Had they succumbed to bird flu or had they merely relocated to flooded fields in the search for a rich new food source?

The Wednesday group already visited East Park in December, so we went to Ness End instead. The best morning bird was a Bearded Tit from Reedy Hide.  We didn’t see the Otter or the Bittern.  Five of the morning group had their lunch in the large green hide, from which they saw not one, not two, but THREE Bitterns!  In all we encountered 40 bird species at Far Ings.  So far it is the largest yielding species location in 2024.

It was another overcast day at East Park on Thursday, but we had a better view of the parakeet after lunch.  On Friday we couldn’t hear or see the Parakeet at all, but after a long search we did track down four Goosanders. The Gadwall and female were also missing, but we did see a flock of 6 Siskins.
