Rare Butterfly & August Highlights

On Monday we travelled to the location of our Butterfly Special venue for one last time in 2019.  It was supposed to be a good time to try and see the extremely scarce and hard to see female Brown Hairstreaks.  There were very few butterflies about at all once away from the butterfly garden.  We tried beyond the main junction and heard and saw a Jay then a pair of Nuthatches but no butterflies of any interest.  We retraced our steps and arrived at the triangle junction.  There were lots of Fleabane and a small scabious species, so there were lots of butterflies around.  the walk towards this area was absolutely packed with darters and a few larger hawker dragonflies.

On the walk back I spotted a strange yellow caterpillar at the top of a distant sprig.  I was attempting to photograph it when I noticed a flash of orange nearby.  Was it just a falling dead Silver Birch leaf?  No, it was the closed wings of a female Brown Hairstreak.  For the next 10 minutes we were able to follow her progress as she laid eggs on the Blackthorn stems.

One day looking for our resident Buzzard we saw a female Sparrowhawk in the middle of plucking a Pigeon.  At first it seemed too heavy a prey for the Sparrowhawk to carry away.
