On Wednesday we switched to Tophill low because of the morning rain and the afternoon wind. The morning group encountered 53 species including: a female Red-Crested Pochard, Goosander, Marsh Harrier, Fieldfare, Redwing, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Bullfinch, GS Woodpecker, Goldeneye, Pochard, Shoveler, Teal, Gadwall, L.Egret. The afternoon session added a Sparrowhawk, but both groups searched for a Kingfisher, Barn Owl and Great Grey Shrike in vain!

On Thursday the weather forecast allowed us to go to Ness End as planned. We saw the two best birds within the first 20 minutes. While a couple of the attendees were talking a distant peep-peep could just be discerned before a Kingfisher flashed in front of the hide and flew to the right until it disappeared. A few minutes later Elaine spotted a Bittern to the right of the hide, but it was very distant flying above the reeds. It landed in roughly the same area we had last seen the Kingfisher.

In addition to those we also saw: Goosander, Goldeneye, Bullfinch, Curlew, Wigeon, Gadwall, Redwing, Long-tailed Tit, GC & L Grebe, Teal, H & T Sparrow, Water Rail (heard only). In the afternoon we added a Marsh Harrier and a Sparrowhawk.

On a windy Friday we were able to go to Tophill Low instead of the bleak occasion planned. The afternoon group saw more than 50 species - most of these were similar to those from Wednesday.
