The day seemed unpromising at first. However, the morning group soon had a Snow Bunting pointed out to them, which was a lifer for several of them. There was a Great Grey Shrike in the canal area, which performed amazingly well in the afternoon. We heard that in one hour it took at least 5 Goldcrests and a Robin. We watched it hovering high over the saltmarsh before it plunged down towards the vegetation, from which it flushed a Goldcrest. It twisted acrobatically as it tried to catch its prey, but was only successful one foray out of five. The Pallas's Warbler was a lifer for all but one participant, but this was the best view of this delightful species any of us had ever enjoyed. In the end the day was an improvement on the previous day.
