Last Friday evening I tried out a possible Nightjar location. I saw three individuals including a couple flying together, but the midges were annoying, and the other birds rather thin on the ground. One Woodcock passed over twice making its frog-like roding noise.

On Tuesday it was very cold and windy, so we went down on the beach first, which was rather sheltered. There were some Razorbills & Puffins on the sea.

Meanwhile, the supermarket shelves were stocked with the usual suspects, but the airwaves were noticeably thinner than 3 years ago. The impact of avian flu was obviously still apparent.

On Wednesday we visited the northern wolds for the first time for a while. It was very windy, so the small birds seemed to keep a low profile. However, once we reached the crossroads, I heard the brief song of a Redstart, so we waited for 20 minutes or so, until everyone had enjoyed good views.

At home we have a family of around 5 immature Wrens and their parents. Sometimes we’ve managed to get remarkably close. Let’s hope they escape the beady eyes of the aggressive Magpie.

On Thursday the weather was forecast to be the worst of the week, so we had to switch from our planned butterfly location to our go-to in bad-weather location. both groups encountered more than 50 species.
