Summer Break Photos

Elephant Hawk-Moth

The long summer break gave the opportunity for some class members to travel far and wide and take photos from some exotic locations.  First Tarifa, near Gibraltar.  Some of these birds are becoming more regular here (Stilt & Night Heron), some are rare vagrants (Wheatear), and others used to be extremely common, but have now become quite hard to find (Spotted Flycatcher).  You woudn't guess Spotted Flycatchers are in trouble from this particular post.

Two class members found a Spotted Flycatcher family slightly closer to home - on the edge of Millington Wood.

Even closer to home, one Wednesday afternoon member was lucky enough to have an immature Green Woodpecker on his lawn.

I didn’t concentrate on photographing birds throughout the summer break, but I did take some if I came across something worthwhile, or some visited the garden. In July I came across a good number of Little Gulls for the first time at Hornsea Mere.  When they aren't moulting they are a neat and dainty small gull.  One of the more acceptable members of that noisy tribe.

A few days later an immature Blackcap came for a drink from the garden pond.

Early in August the local Little Owl must have bred successfully, as in the normal perch a fluffy youngster was sitting prominently.

Towards the end of August an immature Bullfinch on-the-change came in the garden for a drink.  It looks almost prehistoric in a couple of the photos.

I spent a morning in early September at Sammy’s Point a few days after some easterly winds.  There was a small leafless tree with three Spotted Flycatchers, a few Redstarts (not photographed), a confiding Wheatear and some distant Whinchats.  Overall, a very rewarding visit.

After a very poor and slow start, eventually the moth trap started to improve.  In addition to our first-ever Privet Hawk-Moth a few days later a stunning Elephant Hawk Moth was a colourful addition.  The scarcest was a Pine Hawk-Moth, but unfortunatley, that's one of the least colourful of these larger moths.  The following is a compilation of some of the moths seen over the summer.
