Rosedale Abbey Special

The one-off special to the moors above Rosedale Abbey took place on Wednesday last week.  There was one participant representing Weds am, 2 Weds pm, 1 Friday am and one supernumerary.  The morning didn’t bode well with cloud hanging over the moor tops, some drizzle and a chilly wind.  However, once we started the cloud lifted a little and the drizzle stopped.  We drove in convoy to a farmer’s field which during the preceding weeks and even on the Monday held a few Golden Plovers, but of course they were absent on Wednesday morning.  Despite this lack there were Lapwings, and 3 Snipe were feeding at the back of the paddock.  Meadow Pipits were also flying around and landing on drystone walls and barbed wire.

We then drove on to the moors proper, and pulled over when we spotted a family of Red Grouse.  Those in later cars counted at least 8 youngsters.  We carried on further and parked in a suitable area, which had room for 3 cars.  The moorland seemed particularly bleak just there, but we persevered and I heard the plaintive call of a Golden Plover. Shortly afterwards Pete spotted a very smart male with his dowdier partner in the background.  I managed a few photos before he flew away.

Later, we tried looking for Emperor Moths, but the cold wind was still in charge and the clouds refused to break, so in that respect, but no other, were we unsuccessful.

Because of the dry weather quite a few birds have been coming into the garden to make use of the water facilities.

Meanwhile, in the Keyingham Marsh area I found a field, which eventually contained 7 Hares.
