Moorland Birds in the Easter Break

Wheatear

A former class member has a cottage on the moors.  In the cold March weather she twice saw what sounds like a male Merlin visiting the bird feeders.  Screened by a buddleia bush in the first week of the break before the Easter holidays, I watched and waited.  The Merlin didn’t visit while I was there, but I did spot a Mistle Thrush moulding the cup of her nest.  A flock of Fieldfare flew in from a nearby field, and a solitary Wheatear was perched on the opposite hill.  Red Grouse were also heard, but the photos are from a drive to Rosedale.

The Spring Term starts tomorrow, so I had a busman’s day off on the North Yorkshire Moors,  I got there at 7.30 am after a 90 minute drive.  There was a singing Ring Ouzel at Chimney Bank and charming Wheatear, plus Merlin elsewhere on the moors and Golden Plovers among the sheep, and Red Grouse here, there and everywhere.  The sun came out at 10.30, but by then the birds were quieter.  I didn't see the main target of Emperor Moths, but perhaps, it's still a little early for them up in the frozen north?
