Not as Bad as Forecast

On Tuesday we made our first Autumn visit to Paull.  Unfortunately, it became very clear from the car park that it was extremely windy, although it wasn’t a cold wind.  This may have affected some of the waders, which were in fairly short supply.  A large flock of Golden Plovers was swirling over a recently ploughed field just before the village.  We did see Curlew, Redshank, and both Black-tailed and Bar-tailed Godwits.  There were quite a few Shelducks, and on the return journey we did see a lone Guillemot.  It didn’t appear to be moribund, but of course it’s not always possible to tell.  A Greylag Goose on the pebbly beach definitely appeared to be less happy.

On Wednesday the final 2 groups made their journey to Kilnsea this year.  We walked the same route as last week, but the Water Rails failed to show.  There weren’t quite as many Little Egrets in Canal Scrape, but the place had been invaded by Teal and plenty of Wigeon.  The tide was coming in.  One of the best passerines was a Wheatear.  As we walked towards the Warren we noticed distant waders rising into the air, but we couldn’t see a predator until a few minutes later a Merlin flew swiftly past us.  The same thing happened in the afternoon.  We saw three pale-bellied Brent Geese, which have returned earlier than their darker-breasted cousins.

On Thursday a monsoon was forecast, so we abandoned Patrington for North Cave, only to be met with an almost completely dry morning, and a moisture-free afternoon.  Weather forecasters, what's the point of them?

On Friday because of the strong southerly winds we made our first visit to RSPB Blacktoft Sands in 18 months.  The chaos from the twitchers-from-Hell had largely died down, but it was probably busier than a normal Friday in early October.
