A Very Unsettled Week
On Tuesday we were able to visit Paull for the only time that week. We had also been due to visit on The Wednesday and Friday, but the weather intervened. It was warm at Paull and it was high tide, but we enjoyed good views of Curlew, Ringed Plover, Turnstones, Wigeon, Teal, Cormorant, plus less good views of Meadow Pipits, Reed Buntings and Redshank. Wednesday was rained off.
On Thursday we visited Alkborough Flats. It was drizzling for the first hour of the morning, so we checked the hide was empty, before I pulled my sleeve down and opened all the windows for the other attendees. We all wore masks, but my glasses soon misted up in the damp conditions. There had been a very high tide, so there were no waders, and the only ducks were unmentionables and Teal. The highlight was a pair of Bearded Tits which came out fairly briefly on the left hand-side, which just posed long enough for everyone to gain a good look at them. We carried on along the main path, but at the bank took the semi-circular footpath. We heard and caught glimpses of some male Bearded Tits, but they didn’t remain for long. We could hear the squeals of Water Rails, but of course we didn’t see any. Other birds seen included a Little Egret, a field full of Curlew, and a Marsh Harrier.
