First Week of Winter Term

Male Stonechat
The first classes of the winter term 2019 began on Tuesday.  Every group saw over 35 species, some of which were quite colourful in what was mainly an overcast week.  The first session was at an urban park where we encountered 37 species.  These included: 15+ Goosanders, Kingfisher, 3 Goldcrests, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Great Crested Grebe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Mistle Thrush, several families of Long-tailed Tits, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Stock Dove, Collared Dove, Herring Gull, Common Gull and Black-headed Gull.  Unfdortunaterly, we didn't see the Jays, the Shag or any unusual Geese species.  Nevertheless 37 was a good solid start.  The Red Arrow writing in the sky was a bit of a surprise!

In the afternoon I checked out a reliable Tawny Owl site.  It was there, but so were some very obliging Red Kites.

the Thursday groups went to Tophill Low.  The morning tally was for 42 species which included: Marsh Tit, Pintail, Marsh Harrier, Black-tailed Godwit, Goldeneye, Pochard, Wigeon, Great Crested Grebes (no Red-Necked Grebe), Gadwall, Teal, Redshank, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Tufted Duck and Lapwing.  Dick says I shouldn't forget to mention Paul's Kingfisher.

On Friday we went to the Lower Derwent Valley to find after negotiating the notorious zigzag roads a much improved site.  There is now a  footpath covered in gravel instead of mud, and there is also a new hide, which is a bit unsightly, but it was much more comfortable than the old one.  The morning group saw 40 species whilst the afternoon encountered 42, which doesn't include the Barn Owl which the couple from Ossett saw after the rest of us had left.  They also saw Heron, Pheasant and Moorhen outside of the class time.  Other birds seen included: a possible Siberian Chiffchaff, a pair of Stonechats, Pintail, Water Rail, Whooper Swans, Marsh Harrier, Ruff, Golden Plover, Lapwing, Bullfinch, Shoveler, Wigeon, Teal, Cormorant, Mute Swan, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel.  We bumped into Elaine from the Thurs am session, and she almost certainly saw a Merlin.
