Yesterday was a repeat of last Wednesday. Unfortunately, the strong winds meant that part of the sessions were obliterated by sandstorms. The topsoil which is almost sand in that area had completely dried out, and there were was a sand dune almost blocking the road at the reserve's western entrance.

In the wood there were at least 4 singing Willow Warblers, but still only one Chiffchaff. The winds may have dampened down the songs of some other species. There were at least 3 pairs of Marsh Tits throughout the woods, but we didn't find the Willow Tit. Cliff found a silent Blackcap in the afternoon which I expected would turn out to be a Marsh Tit, but sure enough when I checked with my bins Cliff was right! Perhaps it had only just arrived, and was too exhausted to set up territory by singing. Alternatively, it may have been a late returning German bird on its way back too late to put its towel on the sun-lounger.
