Of course in East Yorkshire we are in the fortunate position of having a thriving population of Barn Owls. Each class will be going to an area of Holderness in which almost every farm has a Barn Owl associated with it. On the circuit on one particular day we saw 10 different individual birds, but we would be satisfied with one clear view as good as those above obtained by Vince a couple of days ago. This was within 1 mile of the bird I photographed a month ago being attacked by a Kestrel, so it could even be the partner of the bird I photographed. It cannot be the same bird, because if you compare the underside, Vince's owl has buff breast feathers, which were absent on my bird. Nearly every class has the chance of seeing a Barn Owl, but it often depends what the weather was like the night before, and in the Spring the availability of suitable prey for their chicks will be another factor. Fingers-crossed we have such good views as the above during the course.
