Limbering up for New Term

Unexpected candidate for 1st bird seen in 2009, but it was the 1st bird this year!
Long-tailed Tit
Fieldfare (c) 2009 Jackie Dawson

Common Seal - inland at Stone Creek
First time we've had a decent sunny day since last year, so there were some decent photo opportunities in the garden at last!

What is the first bird?

It's a Lesser Whitethroat, showing some characteristics of an eastern race. The Lesser Whitethroats which bred here last "summer" should be in Africa. This individual turned up on Boxing Day & has been with us ever since!

I hope it can survive our icy winter. I wonder how it is managing to find food. I saw a Chiff Chaff at the quay in Poole a couple of days ago.

It was looking for insect prey at first - spiders' eggs etc - but now seems to be concentrating on a faf slab incoporating mealworms - first of its kind I've put out, but it's proving a winner!
