Corn Bunting
The weather last weekend meant it was the first time since May it was worth checking the Stone Creek area. The Little Owl was lower down in its nesting tree, but my eagle-eyed passenger spotted him. There was also a distant Corn Bunting near my Patrington Haven puddle. It takes only a little sunshine and the Blackbirds can’t wait to look crazy on the lawn.

Last week the morning at Flamborough got to a crazy start with an over-the-top pirate making a lot of noise on the beach!

Tuesday’s final class of the term was at Blacktoft Sands. The morning started well with a fairly close perched Marsh Harrier and then David trumped it with a Water Vole in the drain outside reception hide. We went to Marshland first in the vain hunt for Spotted Redshank, but we did see Green Sandpipers, bog standard Redshank, Lapwing, Heron & Little Egret.Heron

On Wednesday we travelled to Kilnsea once more. There was still plenty of House Martin activity around the caravan site. On Beacon Lane there were fewer Lesser Whitethroats singing, but the Common Whitethroats were more active, as were the Linnets. In the grassy field there were still Meadow Pipits, Skylarks & Hares.

At Beacon Ponds it was possible to see that there had been an influx of Little Gulls, Redshank and larger gulls. The Avocets still seemed to be devoid of offspring. A flock of 3 Dunlin & a single noisy Ringed Plover flew over us, as did a Little Tern - most of the others were nearer their distant nest sites.

We returned to Blacktoft on Thursday. This time we had sunshine and a keen breeze. The Green Sandpipers were still present on Marshland but with added Spotted Redshanks.

On Friday we made our final visit to the supermarket. Most things were the same as last week, although there were more chicks and they were larger than last week. However, Joan spotted the bargain of the week when she noticed a female Peregrine in the air, soon to be joined by another. They proved a real highlight to the final Friday session of the Spring term.
